Ajinomoto Co., Inc.
Partial supply of in-house production of electricity to Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO)

We would like to express our deepest condolences for all those that lost their lives as a result of the Tohoku - Pacific Ocean Earthquake on March 11 and convey our sincerest sympathies for the many people who have been affected by this terrible disaster.

Due to the serious damages caused to nuclear power stations, thermal power stations, and transmission systems by the earthquake, Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO) has been carrying out planned blackouts (*) as it has become difficult to maintain a stable supply of electricity.

Under these circumstances, the Ajinomoto Group decided to provide surplus power from the Kawasaki Plant to TEPCO on the very evening of the day the earthquake occurred.

The Kawasaki Plant has for some time been producing its own electricity, and since 2007 the plant has been producing 100% of its energy needs through in-house electricity production, powered by city gas.

Thanks to diligent efforts to conserve power by all employees of the Ajinomoto Group, including shutting off air conditioning and other measures, we have since been providing 14,000kW of power (which can supply 33,000 households) to TEPCO, which is equivalent to approximately 50% of the plant's electricity production capacity.

The Ajinomoto Group will continue to make every effort to conserve power at the Kawasaki Plant and at all other group locations, and also to make maximum efforts to ensure that we can maintain a steady supply of our products.
